"... Annie M.G. is scène music for the play Annie M.G. ­ de dochter van de dominee (by Ton Vorstenbosch, that premiered 3 september 2003 and until the end of January was performed throughout The Netherlands. During the performances the music, recorded by ELECTRA, was heard in snippets; in the concert version these snippets were put back together as three complete movements. Because the possibilities for a live performance are not the same as in a recording studio, here and there I have adapted the instrumentation. I also lengthened the middle movement by almost half of the original measures, making a short movement out of a super-short piece. The titles of the movements refer to texts or situations in the play, and were translated into English only to prevent any mixups in the stage rehearsals.

'Lethal Custard' refers to the deadly custard that, when the play opens, has brought an end to the life of Annie M.G. Schmidt's husband's life.

'Tempo di Olivetti' opens with a canon for three typewriters that accompany Annie as she types the first lines ofDe dader heeft het gedaan, and transitions into an instrumental scherzando that sets the tone for a 'gossip scène' after the première of this musical.

'Say Goodbye to the Olives' is the music with which the writer says farewell to life, in the last scene. She asks her friends to give her greetings to the olive trees next to her house in France. The point of departure for my music pieces was the sound of a toy piano as an illustration of the fantasy world of the woman that was, according to Vorstenbosch, 'the real Queen of The Netherlands'.

Elmer Schönberger (1950) is auteur en componist. Hij schrijft sinds 1976 in Vrij Nederland, sinds 1982 de ru-briek 'Het Gebroken Oor'. Hij is auteur van een aantal boeken over muziek, waaronder Het apollinisch uurwerk (samen met Louis Andries-sen), De wellus-tige tandarts & andere compo-nisten, De vrouw met de hamer & andere componisten, Histoire d'Oor en De kunst van het kruitverschieten. Bovendien schreef hij de toneelstukken Kwartetten voor vier acteurs en strijkkwartet (Toneel-groep Amsterdam, 1999) en Dovemansoren (Toneelgroep De Appel, 2002). Als componist is hij zowel in het thea-ter (meest recent Twee intermezzi voor Dovemansoren, Monsterkoffer voor Dood van een handelsreiziger, muziek voor Annie M.G. ­ de dochter van de dominee) als op het concertpodium te vinden (meest recent Dr. Haydn's Universe, Faites vos jeux en Schrap). In oktober van dit jaar maakte Schönberger met Vic, met name (Meulenhoff) zijn debuut als romanschrijver.
