Chiel Meijering : Milk en Luiman (2002)

Notes by the composer :
"... For the marimba part I used a drum rhythm (I once was a drummer myself) and translated base/snare/hi-hat/toms-rhythms into a harmonic and melodic thing. Then I wanted something like a hi-hat pattern to be translated into something verbal, so I asked Tatiana to do a rap over it in her own language (which I love the sound of: Bulgarian) more or less in 16th notes and with a lot of sharp/percussion-like sounds in the words she could use. Because I always have more layers in my pieces at the same time, I decided to combine a fast layer (marimba) with a slow layer (violin/voice/recorder) to give the piece a structure.

Chiel Meijering..."

Chiel Meijering has always been an outsider among Dutch composers. He has an enormous output, writes fast and his music has always been accessible, direct and with a provocative pop-like quality. Meijering: 'When you get older you don't bother so much about making idiomatic 'mistakes'. I want to be true to myself. I don't mind a touch of romanticism, and I don't hide the influence of pop music. Pop music is relevant to a lot of composers of my generation and I think it's weird that you don't hear that in their music. Thirty years ago I was the drummer in a Funk band, and I still like my music to have a continually exact beat throughout' (excerpt from an interview with Roeland Hazendonk).
