Louis Andriessen : Workers Union
(1975-1999)
for percussion solo, installation and sound track
Workers
Union (1975) - 'symphonic movement for any loud -sounding group of instruments',
was originally written and dedicated to the Dutch group, Orkest de Volharding.
In
the solo version, the set-up for the Workers Union is derived from a
theater play, Industrial project 1: KLM-Cargo of Theatergroep Hollandia.
During this performance the composition consisted of percussion, sound-track,
piano and actors. The piece was performed in the Freight Station of
KLM - Cargo, Schiphol, The Netherlands, where people and machines work
24 hours per day, non-stop.
This
present version of Workers Union is for percussion installation and
sound-track, and is based on the idea of collectivism. Work and the
Workers are present and performed in the audio track. Even as a solo
version, the entire piece is made possible by the efforts of musicians
and artists, and the player becomes a part of the performing and theatrical
mechanism as well as of the working team.
